George "Snowball" R. Cummings

George R. "Snowball" Cummings, age 92, of Marquette and formerly of Chatham, died Sunday, May 16, 2010, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette. He was born on November 7, 1917, to the late Samuel and Elvie (Blanchard) Cummings. George's mother died when he was only two years old and was raised by his father and mother Annie. George entered into the U.S. Army in September of 1942. He served in WWII receiving the American Theater Service Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and four Overseas Service Bars. George was honorably discharged in November of 1945 as a Technician Third Grade 855th Ordnance Heavy Maintenance Company. He Married Joanne Johnson on December 14, 1959. George worked for the United States Postal Service as a mail deliverer for forty-two years when he retired. Aside from the post office George enjoyed working on people's cars, tractors, and lawn mowers; he would even mow people's yard when he returned their mowers to make sure it was running right. George enjoyed hunting, fishing, and working in his huge vegetable garden. He made some of the best smoked fish, pickles, sauerkraut, and maple syrup. George was quite a joker, telling his witty jokes, keeping a smile on people's faces. His favorite time of the year was the homecoming in Chatham, where he got to work the chicken barbeque for the Lions Club. George's family would like to give a special thanks to his girls and the staff at Jacobetti.
George is survived by his two children - George "Bucky" (Linda Pyrek) Cummings of Wetmore and Crystal "Ta" (Tim) Maynard of Redgranite, WI; son-in-law - Jim Wellman of Marquette; daughter-in-law - Faith Marowsky; four grandchildren - Robert, Courtney, Bryan, and Timmy; brother-in-law - Roland Johnson; close friends -Patty and Nancy Foubert; nephew - David Johnson, and numerous other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife - Joanne; daughter - Sally Wellman; parents - Samuel, Elvie, and Annie Cummings; siblings - Etta, Beatrice, Betty, Vern, Ed, and Clyde.
Visitation will be at the Sion Lutheran Church in Chatham on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Pastor Paul Kelto will conduct George's memorial service at 11:00 a.m. at the Church.
Interment will be at the Limestone Cemetery on Saturday, July 24, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. where the American Legion Honor Guard and Alger County Veterans Council will conduct military honors, along with committal prayers by Pastor Kelto.
