George Peter Gravel, age 72, of Wetmore, died unexpectedly early Wednesday morning, July 27, 2011 at Munising Memorial Hospital. He was born on October 28, 1938 in Munising to the late George and Agnes (Andrews) Gravel. George graduated from Sacred Heart School and then Wm. G. Mather High School in 1956. He married Margaret Louella Hill on October 4, 1958 in Cedarville, Michigan. They lived in Munising and George worked for Don's City Service until 1961. The family moved to Phoenix and then California where George worked for Orange County where he maintained their rural fire trucks. In 1969, they moved to Montana where he worked as a mechanic and then as a stripper in the zinc factory in Great Falls. They returned to Michigan in 1973 to the Clinton Township area and George went to work for Chrysler at the Lynch Road Axel & Assembly Plant until he retired. They were members of St. Valerie Church in Clinton Township where George helped with the C.C.D. program and then at St. Hubert Church in Harrison Township. In 1999, George came home to Munising when he and Louella found their home on Lost Lake. They were members at St. Therese in AuTrain and then Sacred Heart in Munising, and he was a member of the Knights of Columbus. George was devout and lifelong faithful to his Catholic faith. He enjoyed hunting, shooting, fishing, camping, and spending time with his family. George loved the outdoors in the Munising area.
He is survived by his wife of over fifty-two years - Louella; children - Rodney (Jane) Gravel of Mt. Clemens, Christine (Robert) Swanson of Warren, Cathy Schomer of Roseville, Randy Gravel of Ypsilanti, Cindi (Paul) Pirrone of Harrison Township, and SPC Russel (Joey) Gravel stationed out of Fort Cambell, KY; nine grandchildren - Jason (Meghan Mott) Swanson, Nicolle Swanson, Russel J. Gravel, Kyle Schomer, Devon Trombley, Aaron Schomer, Spencer Gravel, Isabel Pirrone, and Sylvia Gravel; great-granddaughter - Haley; and numerous nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Chester (Rose) Poppa and Robert "Father Chester" Poppa.
Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising on Monday evening from 4:00 until 8:00. A combined Knights of Columbus and Parish Vigil Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. During the service, there will be time for sharing of stories and memories. Father Chris Gardiner will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at 12:00 noon at Sacred Heart Church in Munising. Interment will be at the Munising Township Cemetery in Wetmore and George will be escorted by his grandsons.
