George "Jug" Steinhoff, age 76, of 1406 Center Street, Munising, died with his wife, Cleo, at his side on Tuesday, June 20, 2006 at 6:30 p.m. at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising following a year long illness. He was born on August 12, 1929 in Munising to Russell and Grace (Gollinger) Steinhoff. Jug graduated from Sacred Heart School and attended Wm. G. Mather High School. He had worked for the C.C.I. sawmill and commercial fished with his cousin, Chum, before entering into the U.S. Army on April 4, 1951. He served in Korea and earned the Korean Service Medal with two bronze campaign stars and the UN service medal. Jug was discharged on January 3, 1953. He married Cleo Therese Colbus on August 4, 1951. Jug began employment with Kimberly Clark on March 9, 1953 as a broke handler in the beater room. He worked various jobs in different departments and was assigned to material handling in the specialties department. Jug progressed to tractor driver which was the job he held at the time of his retirement on January 1, 1990 after 36 ½ years of service. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, the American Legion, the Alger County Fish & Game Alliance, and a member of "Camp No-Buck" since he was twelve years old. He pitched for the Kimberly Clark softball team for a couple of years, and Jug loved to fish, hunt, tell stories, and make wood crafts. His woodworking included many deer antler mounts for successful hunters and friends. Jug is survived by his wife of over fifty-four years - Cleo Steinhoff of Munising; foster children - Tammy Fetterhoff, Danielle (Tim) Witty, and Floyd "Aug" LaBranch; foster grandchildren - Sasha, Trent, Trevor, Taletha, Cleo, and Ryn; three sisters - Margaret Britton of Marquette, Marie (Tom) Maki of Fenton, and Lillian Moreau of Midland; three brothers - Franklin "Chum" (Margie) Steinhoff of East Jordan, MI, Levi (Joan) Steinhoff of Essexville, MI, and Vern (Susie) Steinhoff of Munising; Jug's second family - Shirley (Paul) Petosky, Joe (Lee) Paquette, Bonnie (Howie) Masters, Gail (Dave) Cromell, and Dee Jay (Heidi) Paquette all of Munising; brothers and sisters-in-law - Dennis (Anita) Colbus of Munising, Ken Cooper of Grand Rapids, Judi Colbus of Munising, Denis Hurst of Grant Center, MI; numerous nieces and nephews; dearest neighbor Amy Dale; Snickers, his "baby" dog, and numerous other neighbors and friends. Jug was preceded in death by his son Danny Steinhoff in 1975, brother Robert "Bubba" Steinhoff, brothers-in-law - Mopey Colbus, Stanley Britton, and Charles Moreau, and sisters-in-law - Marilyn Cooper and Anita Hurst.
Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 5:00 until 8:00. A Parish Vigil Service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Father Chris Gardiner will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, June 23, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Munising. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising where the Alger County Veterans Council and American Legion Honor Guard will conduct military honors. Jug will be escorted by Joe and Dee Jay Paquette, David Cromell, Tony Decet, Del Bryde, and Tom Taylor.
