Munising
Gerald "Jay" Howard, age 82 of 300 W. City Park, Munising, died Tuesday morning, February 17, 2009 at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising following a lengthy illness. He was born on August 14, 1926 in Munising to the late Henry and Lola (Hardy) Howard. Jay drove a logging truck for his brother Carl and on January 14, 1956, he married Naoma Bond. Together they raised their three children. Jay worked road construction throughout the U.P. and Wisconsin. He was a member of the Teamsters and he retired in 1976. Jay enjoyed spending time with his friends. He enjoyed taking long drives with his best friend, Buffy the Chihuahua, and loved to "run away."
He is survived by his two children - Glenda (Bryan) Ely of Van Meer and Gary (Robin) Howard of Gwinn; grandchildren - Heather (Jay) Platt of Philadelphia, PA, Brandon Howard of Gwinn, and Bobbie (Don) Hutchins of Gwinn; three great-grandchildren; sister - Evelyn Hancock of Dearborn Heights, MI; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jay was also preceded in death by his son, Robert Howard, and brothers, Tom, Paul, Carl, William "Bill", and John "Jack."
Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Saturday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Jay's funeral service will be held in the funeral home's chapel on Sunday, February 22, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be in the spring at the Maple Grove Cemetery.
