Grand Marais
Gerald B. "Jerry" Purple, age 70, of Lowder Rd. in Grand Marais, died unexpectedly at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital on Thursday, September 6, 2012. He was born on November 26, 1941 in Munising, Michigan to the late Robert and Cora (Coon) Purple. Jerry married Helen V. Nyman on January 20, 1962, and together they raised their four children. He worked as a truck driver for the Alger County Road Commission for nearly thirty years. Jerry loved to be in the woods and he enjoyed hunting, fishing, logging, but he especially enjoyed trapping with Helen. Jerry spent a lot of time in his garage fixing cars and snowmobiles. He was always willing to help anyone in need.
Jerry is survived by four children - Cindy (Donald) Smith of Wallace, MI, Jerry Purple, Jr. of Grand Marais, Craig (Heather) Purple of Sault Ste. Marie, MI, and Lynn (Marvin) Eddleman of Menominee, MI; grandchildren - Justina (Matt), Brad, Christopher, Scott, Nathan, Cassaundra, Nick, Sophie, Ellie, Tyler, Brooklynn, Allie, and another one on the way; five great-grandchildren; siblings - Patty (Ray) Beaudry, Bev (Paul) Cherney, and Marge (Dan) Kissel; brothers and sisters-in-law - Loreen Purple, Carol Purple, Tom (Bonnie) Nyman, John (Sue) Nyman, Bob (Stevie) Nyman, Bill (Lucille) Nyman, Nina Nyman, Tina Nyman, and Bill Wallace; numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Helen on May 2, 2010, brothers Robert Purple, Richard Purple, and Butch Purple, and in-laws Larry Nyman, Ted Nyman, and Marvel Wallace.
Visitation will be at the First Lutheran Church in Grand Marais on Monday, September 10, 2012 from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. Pastor Jon Babbitt will conduct Jerry's memorial service at noon. Interment will be at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Grand Marais.
