Gerald "Pug" Lloyd Steinhoff, 83 of 8809 N. Lakeside Drive, Rapid River, MI lost his battle with cancer at home surrounded by his loving family on November 8, 2010. He was born in Brown's Addition, Munising, MI on February 28, 1927 to Winfield and Josephine (LaMuth) Steinhoff. He returned to and graduated from William G. Mather High School in 1947 after having served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theater of Shangihi, Japan and Korea. During his tour of duty he received three honor ribbons: Victory, Asiatic Pacific and American Area.
In school he was an avid basketball and football player and received six letterman awards. Following high school, Pug continued his sports interests playing tackle and kicker for the North Team and played in the Cox Chevrolet championship. Later he spent numerous years as an avid bowler, participating in American Bowling Congress tournaments in Milwaukee, Chicago, St. Paul and Detroit.
He gave 22 years of service to the Munising Fire Department and on February 14th 1952 and was trapped in the Beach Inn fire before being rescued and spent several days in the hospital.
In 1952 he joined the Lions Club in Munising and later transferred to the Rapid River Lions in 1975 and served two terms as King Lion. He was a dedicated and tireless supporter of numerous fund-raising activities.
In addition to the Lions Club, he was a member of the American Legion Walter W. Cole Post #301 and St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church and charter member of the Pictured Rocks Golf Club.
Pug joined several other friends in 1970 and formed the Grand Island Playboy Club, where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, family activities and time with his dear friends Hank, Mary Lee and Allie Gendron.
After high school he worked with his dad at Dutch's Service Garage, later he went to work for VanEss/Sub Surface Pipeline Company for thirty years and member of Operating Engineers Local 324 since 1967.
On March 4th, 1972 he married the love of his life, Carol Ann Gereau in Gladstone MI. Together they established a home and raised their family at Maywood Shores, Rapid River, MI. He was outgoing and always had a joke for everyone as well as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Pug loved his canine companions, most recently, Kaiah
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Winfield "Chum" Steinhoff, his sister Pat Kochis-Haro. He is survived by his loving wife, Carol; daughters Teri (Mike) Kirkwood of Little Lake, MI, Traci (Mike) Prunick of Munising, MI, Loma (Todd) Nelson of Conover, WI and son David (Audra) Steinhoff of Gladstone, MI; grandchildren Angela (Mike) Pauqette-Sjornland, Christopher Prunick, Scott Prunick, Jordan Prunick, Jenna Steinhoff, Aaron Steinhoff; great-grandchild Trevor Slinkard; his sister Dorothy Cox and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family of Pug Steinhoff will receive friends on Friday November 12, 2010 from 2:00 to 5:00 PM at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Military Rites will follow visitation at 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home by the Rapid River American Legion Walter W. Cole Post #301. Funeral services will follow at 6:00 PM at the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church with Father Jacek Wtyklo officiating. A luncheon will follow services in the Rapid River Lions Club.
