Gloria Piippo, age 81, of N4925 State Highway, M-94 Chatham, died unexpectedly but peacefully in her sleep at her home on Monday, March 10, 2008. She was born in Grand Marais to Edward and Jenny (Hermanson) Spencer on November 23, 1926. At the age of six, her family moved to Munising and Gloria was a member of the National Honor Society when she graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1944. She worked briefly in New York and while home for her father's funeral, she met Walter Piippo. Gloria and Wally were married on August 28, 1946. She was a homemaker and raised their three children. Gloria was a member of the Munising Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. She had an extraordinary love for her family, nature, creation, and animals. Gloria was a strong advocate for spaying and neutering pets because she had rescued many abandoned and stray animals. She enjoyed gardening and loved to dance to the music of the Will Kilpela Band. She spent last Sunday afternoon listening and dancing to the Finnish music in Trenary. Gloria was very proud of her Finnish heritage. Her kindness was known by the community as she went out of her way to help people and took an interest in what was happening in their lives.
She is survived by her children - Walter (Susan) Piippo of Norwalk, CA, Lisa (Chuck) Wojciechowski of Menomonee Falls, WI, and Dan Piippo of Traunik; three grandchildren - Dan, Marcy, and Raeann; three great-grandsons - James Daniel, Anthony, and Connor; sister - Dorothy (Bob) Nebel of Munising; numerous nieces and nephews; and her kitties Sage and Mimi that she rescued. Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, husband of fifty-five years Wally who died on December 17, 2001, grandson Keith Wojciechowski in November of 2004, sister Sue Pangborn, and brothers Bobby, Ed, and Lionel Spencer.
Services for Gloria will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising on Saturday, March 15, 2008. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. with the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham in the spring.
