Gordon "Gordy" McDonald, age 78, of Munising, died following a brief illness late Wednesday afternoon, November 4, 2015 at his home under the loving care of his family and North Woods Home Hospice. Gordy was born on June 23, 1937 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan to the late Gordon and Muriel (Stocker) McDonald. He graduated from Brimley High School in 1955 and attended Michigan Tech at the Sault Ste. Marie campus. Gordy served in the U.S. Coast Guard from February of 1960 to February of 1964. He was stationed in Marquette, Portage, Munising, and Seul Choix Pointe. While stationed in Munising, he met and married Nancy Carole Tyner on August 25, 1962. He worked for the Munising Foundry Company, Timber Products and a construction company before he began his employment at the Kimberly Clark Munising Mill on October 4, 1965. Gordy worked in the Research and Development, Materials Planning, and Specialties Departments. He retired from the mill on December 5, 1996 as the Specialties Department Planner. After his retirement from the mill until just a couple of weeks ago, Gordy conducted surveys for the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture. He was a member of the Grand Island Masonic Lodge and past member of the Jaycees and Lions Club. Gordy was a good horseshoe thrower and bowler, and he enjoyed playing in leagues for many years. He also enjoyed working on puzzles.
Gordy is survived by his wife of over fifty-three years - Nancy McDonald of Munising; their children - Gregg McDonald of Munising, Jill (Jeff) Santti of Marquette, and Lynn (Dennis) Barron of Munising; five grandchildren - Leah, Nathan, Amy, Jennifer, and Cynthia; three great-grandchildren - Jason, Alison, and Scarlet; sister - Janice O'Connell of La Crescenta, CA; brother - David (Renee) McDonald of Sault Ste. Marie; and numerous nieces in nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Gordon, mother Muriel, step-mother Rita, and parent-in-law Stanley and Marie Tyner.
