Munising
Gregory Henry Shanklin, age 61, of Carmody Road, Munising, died on Saturday afternoon, May 7, 2011 at the V.A. Medical Center in Iron Mountain, Michigan. Greg was born on July 5, 1949 in Detroit, graduated from Central High School in June 1966, and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in July 1966. He served two tours in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in April 1969. Greg returned home and worked for the Post Office in Detroit and as an officer for the State of Michigan. Greg had a love of music which led him to pursue a degree from the Electronic Institute of Technology where he majored in Broadcasting. After graduating, Greg began his career in radio and television under the stage name of Greg Jones with WJLB in Detroit and their sister stations. Greg worked for the Department of Corrections at Huron Valley, Jackson, Marquette and Munising prisons. He was a member of the American Legion and Vietnam Veterans. Greg enjoyed bowling, helping with the Mustang basketball program, and he coached a women's softball team.
He is survived by his longtime companion and best friend - Hazel Armstead of Munising; daughters - Coretta Shanklin of Warren, Sherilyn Shanklin of Westland and Nichole Shanklin of Detroit; grandchildren - Raynard (20), Nakeyia (16), Roosevelt III (16), Briana (15), DeMoines Jr. (11), Meghan (9), Maryah (8), Ahmarri (6), Nickolas (4), Dorianna (21 months) and Kameron (9 months), brother - Wallace Shanklin of Detroit; step-father James Taylor of Detroit;aunt - Bessie Tate of Southfield; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Greg was preceded in death by his mother Lizzie Taylor.
Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Thursday, May 12, 2011 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Greg's service will be held at 4:30 p.m. in the new Veterans Section of the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising where the Alger County Veterans and American Legion Honor Guard will conduct military honors. A luncheon will follow at Greg's Office (The Corktown.)
