Manistique / Shingleton
Gregory B. Stimac, age 75, of Manistique, Michigan, and formerly of Shingleton, died Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette. He was born on May 2, 1941 in Munising to the late Frank and Albena (Shega) Stimac. Greg graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School 1959 and then enlisted into the U.S. Marine Corps on April 14, 1960. He served in Thailand, Korea, and Japan and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Marine Expeditionary Medal, and Rifle Marksman Award. He was honorably discharged as Corporal on April 13, 1964. Greg attended the Skill Center at Northern Michigan University to become a machinist. He joined the Michigan State Police on December 6, 1965. Greg married Barbara Jean Shepley on June 25, 1966 and together raised their two children. The family was stationed in Reed City, Pontiac, St. Ignace, Newberry, and Manistique. While in St. Ignace, Greg was promoted to Sergeant. He retired from Manistique’s Post in June of 1991. After retirement, he worked as the Friend of the Court Officer and for Auto Value in Manistique. Greg enjoyed puttering with things, gardening and caring for his yard, watching all Detroit sports, traveling with Barb, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Greg’s grandkids were very precious to him.
He is survived by his loving wife of over fifty years – Barb Stimac of Manistique; their children – Carmen (Mark) Marciniak of Livonia, MI and Bradley (Amy) Stimac of Houghton Lake, MI; grandchildren – Bryce, Garett, Madison, and Jace; brother – Frank (Bea) Stimac of Munising; sister – Candice Steinhoff of Marquette; and numerous nieces and nephews. Greg was preceded in death by his parents and sister Nancy Trombley.
A celebration of Greg’s life will be held Saturday, May 20, 2017 at the American Legion in Munising from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m.
