Gunnar Mark Hult, age 85, of AuTrain, died on Saturday, June 29, 2024 in AuTrain while on his last great adventure. He was lovingly known as Grampa or Papa Gunnar to almost all who knew him, and anyone that knew Gunnar, knew how much he enjoyed adventures. He was born in Marquette on August 17, 1938 to the late Elton and Gladys (Dorie) Hult. Gunnar always said he was born and raised in Marquette. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving from 1962 until 1964. Gunnar married the love of his life, Joanne Stone on January 14, 1961, and together they raised their three children. He retired from Inland Steel after working there for over thirty years. After his official retirement, he went to work for Great Lakes Towing where he ran the engines on the tugboats. Gunnar always enjoyed yard sale adventures, he was “partner-in-crime” with his great-granddaughter Teagan, enjoyed four-wheeler rides, he loved his Hudson Hornet and enjoyed all car shows and spending time at “Pasty Night Car Club”, and he treasured when his siblings would get together for lunch. Gunnar was a jokester and one of those people who always wanted to see a smile on other people’s faces.
He is survived by his son – Grant (Lori) Hult of Indiana; daughters - Geri Hult of Indiana and Gina (David) Maki of Chatham; grandchildren – Jeremy (Nikki) Hall, Carlie Hult, and Katie Hult; great-granddaughter – Teagan; siblings –– Joan Sanville, Bruce Hult, Steve Hult, and Doris Hall. Gunnar was preceded in death by his parents, he was heartbroken when his wife of over thirty-five years Joanne died on January 29, 1997, and he was also preceded by a sister named Rita Denny.
