Gustave A. Johnson, 93, of Marquette and formerly of Flint, died at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans on Thursday, May 22, 2014. Born May 30, 1920 in Van Meer, Michigan to Charles and Lillian (Humphrey) Johnson, Gus attended school in Van Meer, then as many other young men went to work in the woods. He entered the U.S. Army in January of 1942 serving in numerous battles of WWII in the Asiatic Pacific Theater as well as battles and campaigns in the East Indies and Papua New Guinea. Gustave was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal, four overseas bars, and the Good Conduct Medal. Gus' unit excelled in ways that would earn them the Distinguished Unit Citation. Discharged from active duty in September of 1945, Gus worked here in the Upper Peninsula at the ore mines in Ishpeming. He married Gladys Thayer and she gave to him two beautiful daughters. Gus began a new career with General Motors in 1955 which would last some 27 years. In 1958, Gus would remarry, this time to Josephine Brubaker of Harbor Springs Michigan. Gus was an active member of Bethany Missionary Bible Church in Burton Michigan for over 20 years. A member of the Senior Bowling Leagues in Flint, Gus would be inducted into the Seniors 700 Club at the age of 80. A beloved father, uncle and friend, Gus enjoyed hunting, fishing, wood working and playing his guitar.
Gus is survived by his daughter Linda and son-in-law (his protector as Gus put it,) David Lindeblad of Marquette; His stepson Ronald (Sandra) Broman of Apache Junction, Arizona; grandson - David (Maria) Lindeblad, Jr., a 20 year U.S Naval Officer is stationed in Naples, Italy; step-grandchildren Dawn Alexander of Aurora, CO and Tony Broman of Montrose, CO; great grandchildren Marco and Sara Lindeblad; step-great grandchildren Austin and Conner Alexander, sister Isabelle Paul of Grand Rapids Michigan; brother Carl Johnson of Kokomo Indiana; and numerous nieces and nephews. Gustave was preceded in death by his beloved parents, a daughter Laura Alice Johnson in 1957, wife Josephine, brothers Edward, Alfred and William Johnson and sisters Clara Corp and Florence Newman.
Graveside services will be held at the Munising Township Cemetery in Wetmore on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. The American Legion and Vietnam Veteran Honor Guard will be conducting the military honors; Internment services will be conducted by Dr. David Lindeblad, Pastor of Faith Baptist Church in Munising.
