Wetmore
Hans H. Baij, age 84 of Wetmore, died Wednesday, December 8, 2010 at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. He was born on August 23, 1926 in Munising to Victor and Ebba Baij. Hans grew up and was raised in Fosters Addition (where he lived for seventy-eight years) with his life long friends the Wapienik boys. He spoke of them often, talking about all the fun times they had together. Hans graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in Munising. He enlisted into the U.S. Navy in 1944. Hans was a member of the Seabees, serving in the Asiatic Pacific Area in Okinawa. He was honorably discharged as a Carpenter's Mate Third Class in 1946. Hans married Phyllis C. Monette on January 12, 1952 and together they raised their three children. He began working for the Munising Paper Mill on July 7, 1953 and retired from Kimberly Clark on January 1, 1987 after over thirty-three years of continuous service. Hans was a member of the Pictured Rocks Golf and Country Club, American Legion Post 131, and the Grand Island Playboy Club, where he enjoyed hunting and fishing on the island. He was also an avid fan of the Cowboy Channel and the Young and the Restless.
Hans is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years - Phyllis of Wetmore; three children - Hans (JoAnn) Baij of Felch, MI, Juli (Rick) Ake of Munising, and Perry (Lisa) Baij of Wetmore; eight grandchildren - Karin Blomquist, Brett (Karen), and Janssen (Amber) Baij, Jesse (Jessie) Ake and Rikki (Jason Klick) Ake, and Hailee, Kori, and Jared Baij; eight great-grandchildren - Jordan, Brandon, Cole, Owen, Cameron, Marae, Jamisen, and Jolie; sisters - Niama Moote and Kinky Werner both of Munising; sister-in-law - Gerry (Bill) Mazzali of Fort Isabel, TX; brother-in-law - Dick Froberg of Munising; best friend - "Punk"; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters - Mary (Bud) Resky, Isabelle (Leo) Rick, and Ethel (Floyd) St.Amour; infant great-grandson Baby Boy Ake, and sister-in-law Arlene Froberg.
At Hans' request a celebration of his life will be at the American Legion on Saturday, December 11, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. A committal service and military honors will be conducted by the Alger County Veterans Council and American Legion Honor Guard at the Maple Grove Cemetery on Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 11:00 a.m.
Memorials may be made to the Munising Public Schools "Children in Need Fund".
