Limestone
Harold A. Anttila, age 94, of Limestone, died late Monday morning, August 5, 2013 at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. He was born on February 27, 1919 in Eben Junction, the twelfth of thirteen children to John and Emma (Posso) Anttila. Harold worked as a truck driver for Thorntons and other contractors. He was a World War II Veteran who served in the U.S. Army Air Corps (later Air Force) from 1942 until 1946. Harold earned the American Theater Ribbon and the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon. On February 6, 1943, Harold married Lillian M. Laakso in Long Beach, California and together they raised their four children. After the service, they moved back to the U.P. and Harold began his employment at the Alger County Road Commission where he was known as "Doc". He started as a driver, then became a mechanic, and retired on February 27, 1981 as the shop foreman. Harold was a charter member of the Ikkala Brothers V.F.W. where he served as Commander. He also served on the Chatham Co-Op Board for twenty-five years. Harold enjoyed taking his family on weekend trips, walking, and picnicking. In his later years, his trips took him to visit family in Florida. Harold enjoyed spending time with grandkids and working in his garden until he was ninety. Harold was sometimes known as the "Limestone Cowboy."
He is survived by his wife of seventy years - Lillian of Limestone; daughters - Cheryl Maki of Limestone, Rhonda (Allen) Bossom of Eben, and Janice (Bill) Chasteen of Gillette, Wyoming; son - Gary Anttila of Peshtigo, Wisconsin; nine grandchildren - Amy (Gary) Artley, John (Angela) Maki, Sara Nicholls, Adam Maki, Jeffrey Bossom, Shelley Bossom, John C. (Rochelle) Anttila, William (Lisa) Chasteen, and Robert Chasteen; nine great-grandchildren - Hunter, Lacey, Kaden, Lacey, Logan, Hadley, Dakota, Colter, and Dawson; and several nieces and nephews. Harold was preceded in death by his parents - John and Emma; brothers - William, Alfred, Waino, Ero, Bernhardt, Howard, Arne, and Walter; and sisters - Aili, Lillian, Elsie, and Evelyn.
Services for Harold will be held on Thursday, August 8, 2013 at the Calvary Free Lutheran Church in Eben. Visitation time will be from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Pastor Tom Schierkolk will officiate Harold's funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham where the V.F.W. and American Legion and Vietnam Veteran Honor Guards will conduct military honors.
