Wetmore
Harold Mahon, age 73, of Wetmore, Michigan, died Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at Marquette General Hospital. He was born on March 14, 1941, in Munising, Michigan to the late Raymond and Ellen (Lake) Mahon. Harold graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School 1959. He received a Master Baker's Degree from Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis MN, and an Industrial Engineering Degree from Northern Michigan University, paying the Engineering degree by collecting and selling thousands of railroad ties. Over the years Harold lived in: Downey, CA, Belle Glade, FL, Fort Lauderdale, FL, Kenosha, WI, and Minneapolis, MN. He worked as welder and mechanic at Timber Products, assisted his Father in the Munising Bakery in Munising and in two bakeries in Florida. Harold was quite the entrepreneur; he was the owner of Wetmore Storage, Inc., Wetmore Billboards Inc., and former part-owner of BP Gas Station in Wetmore, now owned by Holiday Gas Corporation. He was formally Married to Connie Gurski. One of the aspects of his work was welding which included construction of the anchor fountain outside of the Peoples State Bank, building snowmobile and walking bridges around the area, constructing fishing net drying racks for commercial fisherman, and mounting snowplows on pickup trucks. Harold was also a skilled carpenter and woodcrafter, and did many other special projects that peaked his interest. If someone needed something done from car maintenance to welding to carpentry they knew who to call. He was a master fabricator. Harold resided most of his life in Wetmore and will be missed deeply by family, friends, and business acquaintances.
Harold is survived by his sister Marie Mahon of Murrieta, CA, brother Jim (Vera) Mahon of Cohasset, MN, and half-brother Jim (Jeanne) King of Eatonville, WA. He was preceded in death by his parents Ray and Ellen and previous wife Connie Gurski.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising. Pastor Jim Robb will conduct a funeral service with an opportunity for friends and family to share remembrances at 2:00 p.m. A funeral luncheon will follow at the First Presbyterian Church in Munising.
