Munising
Harris "Bud" Raymond, age 91, of Munising, died on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. He was born on July 17, 1923 in Munising to the late Fredrick and Elizabeth (Lee) Raymond. Bud graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1942. He married Beatrice M. Mogg on August 7, 1943. Bud entered in the U.S. Army in November of 1943 and was a member of the 82nd Airborne. He served in France, Germany, and Berlin, and on the day he left for Normandy, he was informed that his first child had been born. Bud received the Victory Medal, European - African -Middle Eastern Ribbon with four Bronze Stars, Bronze Service Arrowhead, three Overseas Service Bars, Good Conduct Medal, and a Distinguished Unit Badge. When he returned home, Bud and Bea raised their six children. He went into partnership with his brother and they built a gas station on the corner of M-28 and Superior Street. Bud began employment with the Munising Paper Company on February 25, 1947 as a laborer. He worked through various jobs and worked in the Specialties and Sulphite Departments. Bud retired as the calendar rewinder operator from Kimberly Clark on August 1, 1985. Beatrice preceded him in death on July 21, 1986 after almost forty-three years of marriage. Bud enjoyed being in the woods, hunting, and fishing. He enjoyed building and flying radio controlled airplanes. Once he mastered that craft, he moved on to building an airworthy ultra-light airplane in his living room when he was in his eighties. Bud won many trophies during shooting competitions, and the Alger County Sheriff's Department would deputize him so he could shoot on their team at the U.P. State Fair in Escanaba. He rode his motorcycle until he was in his eighties and made a couple of trips around Lake Superior. Bud was a member of the American Legion, VFW, Senior Citizens Club, and Conservation Club. One of his fondest memories was being a part of the U.P. Honor Flight in 2012.
He is survived by five children - Janet Miron of Wetmore, Sandra (David) Case of Grand Junction, MI; Roberta Ley of St. Johns, MI, Robert "Bud" (Betty) Raymond of Kingford, MI, and Terry (Jeri McGovern) Raymond of Franklin, IN; grandchildren - David, Jr., Rebecca (Darrel), Bethany, Scott (Karen), Donald (Julie), Robert (Nevada), Janet (Bill), James (Kristle), Bill, Kent (Maria), and Kalista; twenty-three great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, and special friend Lee Kangas. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Bea, son Jeff, sons-in-law - Don "Duck" Miron, Doug Ley, and Michael Borkowski; and siblings - Henry (Beatrice) Raymond, Jack (Allie) Raymond, Florence (Chuck) Tervo, Bernice (Martin) Korvela, June (Dick) DuFour, and Helen Mercier.
Visitation will be on Saturday, April 18, 2015 at the Bowerman Funeral Home from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. Pastor Jason LaFlamme will conduct Bud's funeral service beginning at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery on Tuesday, August 18, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. American Legion and Vietnam Veteran Honor Guards will conduct military honors.
