Hazel Lee (Parker) Armstead-Shanklin, age 63, of Munising, died Monday, May 9, 2011 at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. She was born on July 30, 1947, in Detroit, MI, the fourth of seven children to Felix and Geraldine Parker. Hazel was educated in the Detroit public school system, and graduated from Northern High School in 1964. Hazel enjoyed her long career for the State of Michigan Corrections. Through her job she met and eventually married her fellow Corrections Officer Gregory Shanklin on October 7, 2001. Hazel was a fun person to be around. She spent a lot of time in her early years caring for all of her nieces and nephew, and to this day they all agree "She was the coolest Aunt in town." Hazel was very family oriented, and was famous for throwing the best picnics that would excite the entire neighborhood. They would last from dusk to dawn, and today remain some of the most cherished memories. Hazel loved to play games, and was the life of every party, she was also quick witted, and could have everyone falling with laughter. She was an avid reader and puzzle enthusiast. Hazel was considered a good friend to many, and everyone who met her loved her.
She is survived by her three children - Ernest (Karen) Banks of Detroit, Toni Banks of Redford, MI, and April Armstead of Garden City, MI; siblings - Mabel Turner, James Parker, Brenda Parker, and John Nathan Parker; eight grandchildren - Ernest, Derrick , Brandon, Brittany, Arika, Falecia, Timothy, and Alyssa; three great-grandchildren - Shymeen, Kensington, and "Super Ya-Ya's" Mackenzie; and numerous nieces and nephews. Hazel was preceded in death by her husband Greg by only two days; parents Felix Sr. and Geraldine; and siblings Felix Parker, Jr. and Shirley Johnson.
