Helen M. Butts, age 93, of AuTrain died at 4:39 a.m. at her home on Sunday, October 6, 2013 under the loving care of her family and Lake Superior Hospice. She was born on December 16, 1919 in Detroit, Michigan to the late Alfred and Minnie (Klotzin) Boehmke. Helen graduated from Wayne State University with her teaching degree and later went back and earned her Master's Degree in Education. She married Grant Butts on June 16, 1943 and together they raised their five children. After working in the Detroit School District for many years, she and Grant retired to the Upper Peninsula to their home on AuTrain Trail. Helen was an active member of the Eden Lutheran Church family. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed baking and sharing her cookies, reading, cross word puzzles, board games, and even at the age of 93, playing Words with Friends on her Kindle Fire. Helen was family focused, and was proud of her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her five children - William Grant Butts of San Diego, CA, Susan (Bob) Kayl of Christmas, Carol (Monty) Blashill of Chocolay Township, James (Colleen) Butts of Orono, MN, and Margaret (Greg) Cool of Ball Ground, GA, eight grandchildren - Jeffrey (Colleen), Holly (Tim), Becky, James (Laura), Thomas, Kylee, Jen (Shawn), and Dan; and five great-grandchildren. Helen was preceded in death by her husband Grant.
Helen's family would like to give a special thanks to Lake Superior Hospice for their support and care. Memorials in Helen's name may be directed to Lake Superior Hospice or Eden Lutheran Church.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, October 27, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at the Eden Lutheran Church in Munising with Pastor Elisabeth Zant officiating.
