Munising
Helen E. Kane-Shaw, age 96, of 1472 Washington Street, Munising, MI died on Wednesday morning, November 21, 2007 at the Appleton Medical Center in Appleton, WI. Helen was born on November 9, 1911 in Maumee, OH to Seibert and Sophia (Ickler) Cass. She married Alfred J. Kane on October 5, 1935. She worked as a secretary in the purchasing department at Bowling Green State University. Helen and Al lived in the Wayne/Bradner, OH area until 1967, when they moved to Munising. The same year as moving to Munising, they opened Munising Crafts, which they operated until 1979. During this time, Helen also worked in the offices of Kimberly Clark and as an admitting clerk at Munising Memorial Hospital. Al and Helen had been married for over forty-two years when Al preceded her in death on January 5, 1978. On July 13, 1993, Helen married Arthur C. "Bud" Shaw, with whom she spent five happy years before his death on December 10, 1998. Helen had been a member of the Eden Lutheran Church in Munising. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, having joined the Maumee, OH chapter in 1930, and continued to serve in a number of offices in Munising. During her time with Eastern Star, she became a Life Member as well as Past Worthy Matron. Helen also enjoyed the culture of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, particularly the history of Munising and its immediately surrounding area. Helen especially enjoyed traveling this area with visitors and friends to share this experience.
Helen is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Melvin and Barbara Kane of Appleton, WI; grandsons Stephen Kane of Pasadena, CA; Kevin Kane of Chandler, AZ; and Sean Kane, Sean's wife Gail and their three children, Kaitlyn, Ryan and Bret, all of DePere, WI. Helen is also survived by her stepchildren Donna Harrison and her husband Lewis of Onaway, MI; and Jerry Shaw and his wife Sally of Toledo, OH; as well as step grandchildren Cindy Shaw and William Shaw, both of Toledo, OH; and Lorene and her husband Gibb Shuff of Traverse City, MI; and step great-grandchildren Will, Jacob & Josh Harrison of Toledo, OH and Nathaniel and Graham Shuff of Traverse City, MI. In addition to Al & Bud, Helen was also preceded in death by her brother Mel Cass of Pilot Mountain, NC.
Visitation and funeral services will be held at the Eden Lutheran Church in Munising on Monday, November 26, 2007. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Rev. Dr. Lynn Hubbard will conduct services beginning at 3:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising, where she will be escorted by family and friends.
