Helen “Dolly” Szafran, age 95, of AuTrain and formerly of Detroit, died Sunday, March 28, 2021 at Medilodge of Munising. She was born in Detroit, Michigan on March 7, 1926 to the late Domingo and Dolly Nieto. She lived in Hershey, Pennsylvania before moving back to Detroit area at a young age. Dolly worked as the head personal secretary at the Post Office in Detroit. She retired from the United States Postal Service in 1983 after 22 years of service. In 2001, Dolly moved in with her son and daughter-in-law in Redford, MI where she enjoyed her favorite job of all, being a grandma! Grandma was her name and spoiling was the game. Dolly enjoyed, arts and crafts, making flower arrangements, crocheting, and playing BINGO. She was always up for a road trip, traveling with her family to the U.P., Florida, Toronto, and Niagara Falls, or even just galivanting around to Walmart. Dolly was a fun loving and generous woman, she will be greatly missed by all who loved her.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law – Tom and Cammy Szafran of AuTrain; grandson – Thomas Joseph (Jaime) Szafran of Utah; sister – Rosie Nieto; brothers – Jimmy (Roma), Domingo (Kathy) and Louis (Karin) Nieto; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dolly was preceded in death by her parents – Domingo and Dolly; son – Paul D. Szafran; siblings – Milly (George) Brisky, Ann (Ray) Bauer, Joe, Dan (Delores), and Milan (Delores) Gay, and Manny (Conncetta) Nieto.
