Slapneck
Helmi Wanska, age 95, of Slapneck, died Sunday, February 14, 2010 at Marquette General Hospital. She was born on January 2, 1915 at her family home in Slapneck to the late Matti and Linne (Lintula) Kamppinen. Helmi married Elmer David Wanska on April 18, 1942. Together they kept the Wanska family homestead alive for over sixty years when Elmer preceded her in death on December 10, 2002. Although Helmi and Elmer did not have any children of their own, their home was always open to and filled with their numerous nieces and nephews who loved spending their time after school and during the summer months playing and working on the farm. Helmi was a homemaker who enjoyed knitting socks, weaving carpets, and baking biscuit. She was an avid Superior Central sports fan and she donated a pair of socks to be raffled off at each home game. Helmi was a faithful member of the Chatham Apostolic Lutheran Church and she loved spending her time with her sisters and their families.
She is survived by her sisters - Inez Seppanen, Bertha (Warren) Nix, and Lois Maki all of Chatham, and Lorraine (Richard) Horwood of AuTrain and her numerous dearly loved nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. Helmi was preceded in death by her parents, beloved husband Elmer, and sisters Hilda Wanska, Aili Luoma, Anne Hallstrom, Helen Ketcham, Ruth Gohl, and Elaine Latvala.
Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. and also at the church on Friday from noon until 1:00 p.m. Helmi's funeral service will be held at the Chatham Apostolic Lutheran Church on Friday, February 19, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. with Roger Kangas officiating.
