Henry "Hank" Feldhusen, age 89, of Prospect Street, Wetmore, died on Wednesday, September 13, 2006 at 4:35 p.m. at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. He was born on August 12, 1917 in Garden, Michigan to Eugene and Maude (Deloria) Feldhusen. Hank graduated from Kingsford High School in 1935. On January 28, 1938, Henry married Dorothy Mae Kuder. They lived in Garden from 1935 to 1939 while he worked for the Garden Transfer Company. Hank then went to work for Shapiro Fisheries. He would buy fish in the U.P. and truck it to Chicago to be marketed by Shapiro. His job moved his family from fishing town to fishing town from 1940 until 1944. It was in 1944 that they settled in Munising. Henry went to work for the Munising Paper Company on August 4, 1944. The family lived in the "paper mill" houses before moving to Wetmore. He worked there for thirty-five years before retiring from Kimberly Clark as a millwright. During his employment at the mill, Hank was active with the union and served as an officer. Hank played baseball with the Pictured Rocks team in the old Rainbow League and softball for the Munising Bonds. He played basketball on the 1947 Gold Medal U.P. championship team sponsored by Cox Cheverolet. He was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Church, the Knights of Columbus, and he was a past president of the St. Vincent De Paul Society. Henry was proud of his Garden heritage and was honored by the Garden Historical Society as one of its octogenarians. He was a big fan of the Detroit Lions, Tigers, Red Wings, Pistons, and Shock. He was also a lifelong Democrat. Hank and Dorothy were both very proud and supportive of their children. They followed their sport and music events and all of their endeavors. They were also very proud that all six of their children graduated from Northern Michigan University. Dorothy preceded Henry in death after sixty-one years of marriage on June 5, 1999. He and his son, Mike, won the cribbage league last winter at the Knights of Columbus. Being a lifelong cribbage player, Henry was thrilled that on July 31, 2006, he held in his hand a perfect 29. He enjoyed his time at camp (Stolen Hours) and loved his surprise birthday parties where he was celebrated as "The King." Hank was an avid reader and subscribed to several U.P. newspapers. He also kept up with the news on television. He is survived by six children - Thomas (Patricia) of Republic, Henry (Janet) of Toivola, David of Green Bay, Mary of Gladstone, and Michael and Barbara of Wetmore; grandchildren - Michael (Allison), Tommie Sue, Joie (Kyle), Jamie (David), Eric, Erin (Brian), Heather, Kim (Bill), and Rhonda (Pavel); great-grandchildren - Amanda, Kirstyn, Hailey, Kyle, and Petra; two sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews; and his grandcat Jaspurr. Henry was preceded in death by his parents, wife Dorothy, daughter-in-law Jacquelyn (Revord) Feldhusen, and sister Betty Dallapiazza.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated by Father Chris Gardiner on Monday, September 18, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Munising.
