Trenary
Ida Marie Sirtola, age 96, of Saari Road, Trenary, died at her home with her family surrounding her on Monday, August 7, 2006 at 3:33 p.m. She was born on July 4, 1910 in Trenary to Gust and Hilma (Kuninkainen) Laytonen and attended school in Trenary. As a young girl, Ida worked as a laundry and cook's helper at a logging camp in Nahma. She married John William Sirtola on October 5, 1930. Ida and John lived in Gwinn and in 1941, they moved to Detroit. She did housekeeping for wealthy families in the Detroit area. In 1953, they moved to Troy where she worked as a custodian in the Troy school systems for many years. They retired and returned to Trenary in 1974 where she and John built their home on the beautiful setting of the West Branch of the Whitefish River. They were married over forty-seven years when he preceded her in death on October 14, 1977. Ida's formal education ended after eighth grade, but continued to learn and self educated herself throughout her life. She loved to write and her grammar was impeccable. She was a hard working and loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed having a good time. Ida enjoyed driving cars fast (she even "stole" her son's car) and loved keeping her children on their toes. When she disagreed with them, she would ask them, "Are you mental?" She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Trenary, the Trenary Senior Citizens, and Ida loved celebrating her birthday on Independence Day with the Trenary celebrations. Ida was always caregiving. She had wonderful soft and strong hands that would massage away any aches and pains. Had she continued with her education, she would have made a wonderful nurse or masseuse.
She is survived by her children: Theresa "Vivian" Preston of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Arnold (Donna) Sirtola of Rock, MI, Dolores Carnell of Trenary, William (Micha) Sirtola of Rock, and Linda Sirtola of Trenary; 14 grandchildren - Bill, Rick, John, and Anna Workman; Gerald (Tricia), and Theresa Preston; Richard Sirtola; Ron (Mary Keils) and Randy (Susan) Carnell; Jennifer, Matthew, and Daniel Sirtola; Billy (Laine) and Shauna DeGarmo; 15 great grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren; sister- Hilma Adair, and numerous nieces and nephews. Ida was preceded in death by her parents, husband John, a grandson James Workman, sister Aina Zimmerman, and brothers Frank, John, and Charles Laytonen.
Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Friday, August 18, 2006 from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Pastor Irene White will conduct Ida's funeral service at the United Methodist Church in Trenary on Saturday, August 19, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Mathias Township Cemetery in Trenary and Ida will be escorted by her grandchildren.
