Irene Kinnunen, age 89, of N7190 Connors Road, Munising, died late Sunday morning, April 6, 2008 at Marquette General Hospital. She was born in Wetmore on September 9, 1918 to Jacob and Dorothy (Gondeck) Dominick. Irene graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1937. On September 15, 1939, she married William E. Kinnunen. Irene had worked at the Munising Paper Company and the Northern Motel while raising their five children. She was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Church. Irene enjoyed gardening, reading her prayer book and Bible, picking blueberries and raspberries, knitting, crocheting, and spending time with her family. She especially enjoyed her one on one time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband of over sixty-eight years - William Kinnunen of Munising; daughter - Helen Peters of Munising; sons - William Kinnunen, Jr. of Munising, Raymond (Renee') Kinnunen of Stillwater, OK, Ronald Kinnunen of Marquette, and Donald (Betty) Kinnunen of Shingleton; eleven grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; sister - Elizabeth Flaishans of Trenton, MI; brother - Raymond (Anna) Dominick of Green Bay; brothers and sisters-in-law - Reino (Nancy) Kinnunen and Jerry (Roberta) Kinnunen all of Munising, Bertha Hill of Dukes, Ann Birkholz of North Dakota, Lillian Hampel of Burlington, WA, and Nancy Lindell of Olympia, WA. Irene was preceded in death by her parents, son-in-law - Charlie Peters, and brothers - Joseph, Frank, and Arnold "Jake" Dominick.
Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. A Parish Vigil service will be held at 7:00 p.m. where there will be a time for sharing stories and memories. Father Chris Gardiner will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, April 10, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery and Irene will be escorted by her grandsons and great-grandson.
