Irene Lydia VanLandschoot

Irene Lydia VanLandschoot, age 95, of Commercial Street, Munising, died on Wednesday morning, April 6, 2011 at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. Irene was born on June 15, 1915 in Negaunee, Michigan to William and Augusta Kangas. She was raised in Forest Lake and moved to Munising at the age of seventeen. Irene worked at the Beach Inn as a cook and baker. Her specialty pies were enjoyed not only by her family and friends, but by Henry Ford, Duncan Hines and Oscar Mayer. She married Paul Jacob VanLandschoot on October 18, 1947. Irene was a homemaker and she also cooked breakfast at the Red Cedar for many years. Irene was blessed with a lifelong friend, Audrey Dolaskie. Together they enjoyed family cookouts, spending their Friday nights out and walking. Irene would oftentimes walk across the ice to Grand Island. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and also enjoyed feeding the birds, watching the animals and reading novels.

Irene is survived by daughters - Bonnie Fulcher of Wetmore and Paula Rae (Richard) White of Alpena; son - Paul A. "Brud" (Denise) VanLandschoot of Munising; step-daughter - Nan (Bill) Josephson of Saline, MI; twelve grandchildren - David (Debi) Fulcher, Christine (Ed) Heribacka, Kathy Fulcher, Susan (Chuck) Riley, Natalie (Nick Nowak) White, Jeremy (Tricia) VanLandschoot, Amber (Lee) Curtis, Jessica (Sasha) Obydyennon, Monica VanLandschoot, JoAnne (Mike) Ashenden, Vicky (Reuben) Klein and Peggy (Doug) Creech; seventeen great-grandchildren; eleven great-great grandchildren; sister-in-law Leona Kangas; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband of over fifty-four years, Paul, who died on April 24, 2002, son-in-law Marlin Fulcher and brothers Paavo and John Kangas.

Services for Irene will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Friday, April 8, 2011. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon until 3:00 p.m. Pastor Elisabeth Zant will conduct the funeral at 3:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery and she will be escorted by grandsons Jeremy, David, Josh, Ben, Curt and Jay. Memorials in memory of Irene are requested to the First Presbyterian Church or the Munising Public Library.
