Jacob "Jake" Hayrynen, age 84, of N7745 Evergreen Drive, Christmas, died peacefully in his sleep under the loving palliative care of the nurses in the nursing home of the Iron Mountain V.A. Hospital on Tuesday evening, February 3, 2009. He was born and raised in Toivola on March 14, 1924 to Jacob and Aliina (Maata) Hayrynen. Jake's mother died when he was eight and he was also raised by his step-mother, Selma Hayrynen. He attended school in Toivola and in 1943, he joined the U.S. Army. Jake served as a paratrooper and was a member of the Battery A 464th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion and Life Member of the 17th Airborne. He was involved in battles and campaigns at Rhineland and Central Europe. Jake earned the WWII Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon with 2 Bronze Battle Stars, Bronze Service Arrowhead, an Overseas Bar, and the Good Conduct Medal. Jake was discharged on February 1, 1946. On April 17, 1954, he married Doris Hoffman in Detroit. Jake and Doris lived in Garden City and he earned his G.E.D, went to school at Detroit College of Applied Science, and then graduated from Oakland Community College with an Associate's Degree. Jake went to work for GM and retired from there in 1983. In Garden City, they were charter members of the Good Hope Church and Jake was very active with the Masons. He was a member of the Garden City Builder's Lodge #587, Free and Accepted Masons, the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Lodge Chapter Consistory-Valley of Detroit, Ahmed Shriners of North America. In 1988, they moved to Christmas and became members of the Eden Lutheran Church. Jake and Doris enjoyed being members of the U.P. Chapter of the League of Finnish American Society; they were Life members of the Finnish Center Association, and members of the Democratic Party. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, sculpting, and painting.

Jake is survived by his wife of almost 55 years - Doris Hayrynen of Christmas; daughter - Wendy (Donald) Andison of Canton, MI; son - Jacob (Donna) Hayrynen of Negaunee; granddaughters - Audrey Andison, Lauren Hayrynen, and Annaliise Hayrynen; sister - Ruth Sheehan of South Range; brothers - Paul Hayrynen and Douglas (Laverne) Hayrynen of South Range; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Jacob, Aliina, and Selma; brothers - Carl, William and Roy; and sisters - Martha Kotajarvi, Elma Kemppa, Edna Lorash, Eva Marullo, and Betty Palmer.

Memorials in memory of Jake are requested to be donated to the Ahmed Shrine Patient Transportation Fund, 128 W. Washington Street, Marquette, MI 49855.
Jake's memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Eden Lutheran Church in Munising. There will be visiting time with family and friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Following the memorial service, there will be a time of fellowship and luncheon at the church. Interment will be at the Northland Chapel Gardens in Negaunee on Monday, August 24, 2009 at 11:00 a.m.
