Shingleton James H. Barrow, Sr., age 79, of Shingleton, died Tuesday evening, January 24, 2012 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on November 8, 1932, in Jordan Township, Michigan, to the late Peter and Myrtle (Allen-Pence) Barrow. Jim played on the Shingleton Traveling Baseball Team, playing all over the UP trying to play like his favorite Yogi Berra. He entered into the United States Army in June of 1952, and was a member of the Triple-Nickel Artillery Division in the Korean War, then was honorably discharged in June of 1954 as a Sergeant. Jim married Charlotte M. Ruggles on August 14, 1954, and together they raised their four children. Jim enjoyed working in the woods for Ed and Leslie Graves, before moving to Royal Oak, MI where he took on a position as the production foreman at Brickcrete Building Supplies. When he retired in 1978, he moved back to the UP, where he continued making patio block. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was an all-around handyman. Jim loved the Lions and Tigers, and his many dogs that he treated like they were one of his children. He is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years - Charlotte of Shingleton; sons - Jim "Lil Wheel" (Kathy) Barrow, Jr. of Escanaba, Steve Barrow of Shingleton, and Billy (Diane) Barrow of Clarkston, MI; nine grandchildren - Shannon (Matt), Dallas (Vanessa), Danny, Deanna, Darcie, Stephen Jr., Jennifer, Billy II, and Bredan; six great-grandchildren; brother - Peter (Evelyn) Barrow of Munising; sister-in-law - Donna Barrow; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Peter and Myrtle, daughter Eva, and siblings Dallas Arball, Eva (Bill) Grobosky, Jack (Margie) Arball, Stephen (Nancy) Barrow, and Margaret (Bob) Nelson. Jim's visitation will be on Saturday, January 28, 2012 from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. with his funeral starting at 4:00 p.m. all at the Bowerman Funeral Home. ***Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising, on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at 11:30 a.m. where the American Legion and Vietnam Veterans of America Honor Guard will conduct military Honors.***
