Wetmore
James "Jim" P. Howard, age 66, of Maple Ridge Court, Wetmore, died unexpectedly on Thursday afternoon, July 9, 2009. He was born on June 17, 1943 to Paul and Dorothy (Heminger) Howard in Manistique, Michigan. Jim started his hard work ethics young. While only thirteen years old, he saved up enough money working at the Hart Farm in Van Meer to buy his horse Paso. Jim enlisted into the United States Marine Corps. in October of 1960 and was honorably discharged in November of 1963. He married April L. McDonald on June 5, 1965, and together they raised their two daughters. Jim worked at a number of places, and could operate any piece of heavy machinery. He worked for the Rail Road, Roy Graves Saw Mill, Timber Products for over nine years, he drove semi and double dump truck for Gerou's for over twenty years. Jim also ran Howard's Small Engine Repair out of his basement. No matter where he was working, he worked hard and never missed a day. Jim loved cross country skiing and biking, he was a member of the Anna River Peddler Club, and loved making cross country ski trails with his skiing buddies. He also enjoyed camping, hunting, and golfing. Jim had even recently acquired an interest in yoga to help improve his flexibility to help his golf game. Jim loved to be involved in all of his grandchildren activities and sports, and could never say enough good things about his daughters.
He was survived by his wife of forty-four years - April Howard of Wetmore; two daughters and sons-in-law - Lisa Howard and Perry Baij and Rhonda and Tim Lassila all of Wetmore; grandchildren - Hailee, Kori, and Jared Baij, and T.J. (Amy), Shannon, Trevor, and Jesse Lassila; great-grandchildren - Savannah and Gianna; mother - Dorothy Kusmirek; siblings - Jerry (Bev) Howard of Van Meer and Carol Howard of Gwinn; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and special friends - Lloyd and Linda Storm and Lew and Nancy Paradis. Jim was preceded in death by his father Paul Howard.
Visitation will be on Sunday, July 12, 2009 at the Bowerman Funeral Home from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Jim's funeral will be on Monday, July 13 at the Bowerman Funeral Home beginning at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Munising Township Cemetery in Wetmore where the Alger County Veterans Council will conduct Military Honors.
