James "Tony" John Maki

James John "Tony" Maki, age 85, of Chatham, died unexpectedly on Monday, November 24, 2014 at Marquette General Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born on August 13, 1929 in Munising to the late George and Saima (Mahalanen) Maki. Tony graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in Munising. He went to work for the Alger County Road Commission and was drafted into the U.S. Army. Tony served during the Korean Conflict. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Forest Lake and went back to work with the Road Commission. Tony married Eleanor R. Johnson on June 9, 1961 and together they raised their sons. They were married over forty-one years when she preceded him in death on May 26, 2003. Tony worked for the Road Commission as a heavy equipment operator for over thirty-eight years before his retirement. He was a member of the Sion Lutheran Church and of the American Legion. Tony enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, spending time with his grandchildren, coffee klatches with the neighbors, and watching Tiger baseball games.
Tony is survived by his sons - David John & Gina Maki of Chatham and Daniel George & Nicole Maki of Chatham; grandchildren - Sophia "Pepper" Lynn Maki, James "Sisu" John Maki II, and Jeremy (Nikki) Hall; sister-in-law - Lois Maki of Houghton; one niece; one nephew; and great-granddaughter - Teagan Hall. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Eleanor, and twin brother Dick Maki.
Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Friday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. and also at the church on Saturday morning from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service. Pastor Paul Kelto will conduct Tony's funeral service on Saturday, November 29, 2014 at 12:00 noon at the Sion Lutheran Church in Chatham. Interment will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham on Friday, May 1, 2015 at 3:30 p.m. where the American Legion and Vietnam Veteran Honor Guard will conduct military honors.
