Escanaba / Shingleton
Janice Ann Nelson, age 69, of 430 S. 14th Street, Escanaba, Michigan was called home on Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at Marquette General Hospital after a long battle with cancer. Janice was born in Munising, Michigan on October 26, 1941 and was preceded in death by her parents Adelore and Evelyn (St.Martin) Perron and brother Joseph. Janice once worked as a turn key for Alger County Sheriff George Thayer, as a desk clerk for the Days Inn and Comfort Inn of Munising and as a cook at Mrs. Claus' Kitchen in Christmas, Michigan. She attended Munising schools and was a graduate of Mather High School in Munising. Janice also lived in Shingleton, Michigan for twenty years before moving to Escanaba. She had married William G. Nelson of Escanaba on October 2, 1982 and was co-editor of Bill's book "Harvey the Great Lakes Whale." Janice was known for her amazing singing voice and enjoyed making afghans for her children and grandchildren. She and Bill thrilled many children over the years during Christmas when they helped Santa and Mrs. Claus spread joy throughout Alger County. Janice will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her husband - William G. Nelson of Escanaba; three sons - Jeffrey O'Brien of Muskegon, Michigan, David (Tina) Nelson of Bronson, Michigan and William P. (Cherish) Nelson of Niagara, Wisconsin; three daughters - Mary (Bill) Belen of Munising, Michigan, Laurelle Woller of Shingleton, Michigan and Rena (Rod) Nelson of Niagara, Wisconsin; thirteen grandchildren - Brandon, Jayme, Jasmine, Chris, Kaye, Samantha, Sarah, Michael (Melissa), Katherine, Joshua, Christina, Marylynn and Ashley; great-grandchildren - Kimberly, Lander, Lilliana, Layla and one on the way; sister - Linda Ekins of Lansing, Michigan; niece - Jennifer Pasden; nephew Aaron Ekins; and numerous cousins.
A memorial service will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Saturday, August 6, 2011 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Elisabeth Zant officiating. Visiting time with family and friends will be from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m.
Memorials in memory of Janice are requested to the Beacon House of Marquette General Hospital.Janice's burial will be on Saturday, May 26, 2012 at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising at 12:00 p.m.
