Jean Marie Monette

March 18, 1925 — September 21, 2013

Munising
Jean Marie Monette, age 88, of Munising and loving known by many as "Aunt Jean", died late Saturday evening, September 21, 2013 at Munising Memorial Hospital. She was born on March 18, 1925 in Munising to the late Arthur Joseph and Stella Marie (Barrows) Monette, Sr. Jean graduated from Sacred Heart School and then Mather High School in 1943. She worked at the former Michigan Gas and Electric in Munising. Jean then moved to Racine, Wisconsin and was employed at S.C. Johnson Wax. She worked in various positions in the Credit and Account Receivables Department and retired in 1989. Jean was a life member of the All Saints Healthcare VIP Hospital Auxiliary, the S.C. Johnson Twenty Year Club, and a Forty + Year member of the Racine Chapter IAAP where she also served as Secretary. Jean was a faithful woman to her Catholic Church and beliefs. She was active at various duties at the former St. Rose Parish in Racine. When she moved back to Munising in 2001, she became a member at Sacred Heart Church. During the last six years, Jean served as the lector at Tendercare when Masses where held at the nursing home. She was also a contributing member of the Alger County Historical Society.

Jean was a well-travelled lady having travelled to every state except Hawaii. So for her "Last Hoorah" on her 80th birthday, she and her family travel companions took a trip to Hawaii. She was able to see the U.S.S. Arizona which was one of her greatest memories. Jean especially enjoyed socializing, having a few toddies, and telling her travel stories. Although Jean never had been married, her nieces and nephews (and their friends) were her children. All of her nieces will remember the summer trip to Aunt Jean's for school shopping, the Milwaukee Zoo, and Great America. Jean was an avid reader and crossword solver, and no one wanted to play trivia against her because of her knowledge - especially in geography. Jean was dearly loved and will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

Jean is survived by her sister and brother-in-law - Ruth Ann and Jim Cox of Munising; her brothers - Arthur "Joe" Monette, Jr. of Munising and Donald Monette of Williamston; and thirteen nieces and nephews - Becky (Jim) Schierschmidt, Sue (Gary) Schertz, Jim (Jean) Cox II, Kelly (Brian) Swette, Lynn (Greg) Oshnok, Dan (Cheryl) Monette, Doug (Julie) Monette, Dean (Barb) Monette, Durae (Tim) Tiernan, Dana (Robin) Monette, Jim (Kim) Monette, Brenda (Robert) Beasley, Judy (Joe) Pavlica; and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Arthur and Stella and by sisters-in-law Carol Monette and Pat Monette.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated by Father Ben Paris on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at Sacred Heart Church in Munising at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery. A time of fellowship and visiting with family and friends will take place in LaMothe Hall following the services.

In lieu of flowers and in memory of Jean's great love for books, memorials are requested to be made to the Munising Public Library, 810 State Highway M-28 - Suite A, Munising, MI 49862.
