Jerry Lee Cromell, Sr

August 21, 1938 — February 21, 2012

Chatham / Munising

Jerry L. Cromell, Sr., age 73, of Oja Road, Chatham (mailing address - P.O. Box 64 - Munising) and longtime Munising resident, died unexpectedly at his home in Chatham on Tuesday morning, February 21, 2012. Jerry had been recovering from some kidney problems and his death was not expected. He was born on August 21, 1938 in Munising to the late Henry "Hank" and Argene (Miron) Cromell. Jerry graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1956 and in December of that year, he joined the U.S. Navy. When boot camp was over, he married his sweetheart, Judy Strand, on March 30, 1957. The Navy took him to aeronautical photography school in Oklahoma, the U.S.S. Saratoga, lifeguarding in Florida. He and Judy returned to Munising and raised their seven children. Jerry began employment at Kimberly Clark in April of 1965, and through his thirty-one years of continuous service, he worked in the Specialties Dept., the Powerhouse, and in the Maintenance Dept. He retired on January 1, 1997. Jerry served as a volunteer member of the Munising Fire Dept. and he was a Life Member of the American Legion. He and Judy and his brother and sister-in-law Bob and Judy, opened up and operated Sea & Ski Scuba in Brown's Addition. They were active in promoting the Underwater Preserve and encouraged divers to dive the Munising Bay. Jerry avidly studied and researched the Bible. He spent many hours researching history, geography, and maps. Jerry had a gifted appreciation and knowledge of the outdoors. He knew the woods and our local area and could guide people in and out of the woods with no problems. It was a gift taught to him and his brothers by their father, and Jerry passed the knowledge down to his sons. He was a wonderful cook and a master make-shifter and inventor. It was amazing what Jerry could rig with duct tape. He could patch his jeans, fix a cast on a broken arm, and fix the muffler with it. He enjoyed Robert Service's poetry, gardening, and telling stories. Jerry always loved an adventure. He enjoyed canoeing, kayaking, panning for gold, camping, mushroom hunting, and photographing (especially Judy when she was sleeping or in her underwear.) He enjoyed traveling and took trips to Alaska, the Northwest Territory, and the Arctic Circle. Jerry was a wonderful and strong man who stood by his convictions and everyone enjoyed spending time with him.

Jerry is survived by his wife of fifty-five years - Judy of Chatham; their children - Pam Cromell of Milwaukee, Jerry (Sheri Sherfield) Cromell, Jr. of Friendship, WI; Janette Cromell of Munising, Peggy Cromell of Munising, Paul Cromell of Munising, Bonnie (Craig) Field of Chatham, and Jonathan (Tashia Leffel) Cromell of Munising; grandchildren - Paul Aaron Lee Cromell, Meriah Cromell, Mirissa and Miranda Eiseman, and Sheyenne Blaise Sherfield; two great-grandchildren - Chloie and Karson; siblings - Thomas Cromell of Munising, Donald ( Linda) Cromell of Gaylord, Jack (Darlene) Cromell of Grand Junction, CO, Robert (Judy) Cromell of Munising, Connie Albin of Traverse City, Ralph (Frances) Cromell of Nucla, CO, David (Gail) Cromell of Munising, Bruce (Mary) Cromell of Munising, Janice "Tunie" (Mike) Perron of Munising, and Susan (Jerry) Steinhoff of Wallace, MI; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
