Munising
Joan Catherine Anderson, age 66, of 314 Maple Street, Munising, died at home peacefully in her sleep on the morning of the Feast of Corpus Christi, Sunday, June 22, 2014. She was born on July 19, 1947, the youngest of eleven children to Edward and Lucille (Pepin) Gauthier. Joan graduated from Sacred Heart School and then from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1964. She helped her sisters care for her nieces and nephews before she joined the convent. Joan studied there until her father died in 1969. She then finished her studies and graduated from Northern Michigan University with a Bachelor Degree in Social Work. Joan earned her Master's Degree from the University of Michigan. She worked as a juvenile officer for Judge Pater at the Alger Court House. Joan married James E. Anderson on October 4, 1978 and they were blessed with their daughter, Cecilia. When Cecilia was in elementary school, Joan went to work for the LMAS Health Department as a social worker. She was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Church and to her Catholic faith. She was also active with Right to Life. Joan lived her profession of a social work as a vocation. She volunteered with Girl Scouts, helped train the LMAS Hospice workers, organized coffee social donations for the needy and was generous to St. Jude's, Veteran's organizations and the Salesian Missons. Joan enjoyed knitting, working on her computer, spending time with her sisters and mystery shows on television. She loved spending time with her grandson, Anderson.
She is survived by her husband of over thirty-five years - Deacon James E. Anderson of Munising; their daughter and son-in-law - Cecilia Anderson and Jaka Hardiwinangun of Katy, TX; grandson - Anderson Bagja Hardiwinangun; sisters - Betty Stock of Gladstone, Charla Younk of Norway and Zella (Ron) Greb of Kenosha, WI; sister-in-law - Sue Gauthier of Munising; members of the Roswell and Pearl Anderson family; and numerous nieces and nephews. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Donald, Francis, Bob, Harold, Leland and Daniel Gauthier, sister Phyllis Eiseman, sister-in-law Cindy Gauthier; brothers-in-law Victor Stock and Darrel Younk, Sr. and parents-in-law Roswell and Pearl Anderson.
Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Wednesday evening from 5:00 p.m until 7:30 p.m. A Rosary will be prayed at 7:30 and then there will be an opportunity to share stories and memories. Father Chris Gardiner will celebrate Joan's Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, June 26, 2014 at Sacred Heart Church in Munising at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Joan's name may be directed to a local St. Vincent De Paul Society or Salvation Army.
