Munising
Joan L. Oberg, age 77, of Munising and formerly of Manistique and Escanaba, died unexpectedly at her home following a lengthy illness on Sunday, January 18, 2015. She was born on May 21, 1937 in Manistique to the late James and Eleanor (Brucklmayer) Gierke. Joan married John Oberg on November 21, 1953 in Manistique, and together they raised their three sons. They moved to Escanaba in 1956 and lived there for thirty years. Joan worked an assortment of jobs from catalog sales person for Sears, Wards, and Aldens then to phone operator at Michigan Bell. John was transferred to Orlando and they lived in Lake Mary and St. Cloud, FL. Her favorite place to live was the four years they spent in the Middle East in the country of Oman. Joan served as an officer in the American Women's Club there, and was in charge of organizing meetings and parties. They eventually moved back to the U.P. and cherished their time in the woods. Joan enjoyed reading, pontooning, and playing with her Maltese, Tinker.
She is survived by her husband of over sixty-one years - John Oberg of Munising; sons - Ronald (Carol) Oberg of Gooseneck Lake, James (Andrea) Oberg of Lakewood, CO, and Michael Oberg of Gwinn; grandchildren - Kristin, Tom, Matt and Kayla; and great-grandchildren - Emma and Haley; and brother - Michael (Joan) Gierke of Escanaba. Joan was preceded in death by her parents and sister Ruth Ann "Hootie" (Martin) Holmberg.
