Joe Ostanek

February 28, 1921 — October 27, 2015

Joe Ostanek of Trenary, Michigan, left this world peacefully at his home on the strawberry farm on October 27, 2015 at the age of 94.

Joe was born to John and Agnes Ostanek in a logging camp in Slapneck, Michigan on February 28, 1921. He spent his early years on the family farm in Traunik, and then enlisted into the United States Marine Corps in 1942. Joe fought and was wounded in battle on Iwo Jima in WWII and was awarded a Purple Heart.

On October 20, 1951, Joe married Sylvia Ollila. They were happily married for nearly fifty-four years when she preceded him in death in April of 2005. In 1959, Joe and Sylvia established a strawberry farm and maple syrup operation in Trenary providing sweet treats to customers across the U.P.

Joe was Daddy to five daughters - the late Marcia (Ron, and daughter Leslie) Begovac, Susan (Pete) Pena, Jill Cutting, Julie (Sam) Trotter, and Lori (Peter Maki) Ostanek-Maki. He was Papa Joe to nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Joe enjoyed working hard on his farm, spending time with family, and good food. He also liked to try his luck at the casino.

Per Joe's wishes, no public services will be held.
