John "Jack" LaMont age 54 of Marysville, WA and formerly of Munising, passed away December 4, 2010, at Morning Star Peak in Washington. He was born on February 2, 1956, in Munising to James and Carol (Pelletier) LaMont. Jack graduated from Mather High School with the Class of 1974. He went on to Bay de Noc College, and earned a degree in Waste Water Treatment. Jack then moved to Tucson, Arizona, where he worked for I.B.M for twenty-five years. He was awarded Operator of the Year in 1984 by the Arizona Water and Pollution Control Association, for successfully starting and maintaining his companies "zero discharge" industrial waste treatment plant. Jack moved to Washington to work for the city of Everett in 1991where he worked nine-teen years. He received the Washington State's 2005 Operator of the Year by the Pacific Northwest Clean Water Association.
Jack fell in love with the mountains and joined the Everett Mountaineers Group in 1995. He received numerous awards for achieving successful climbs on numerous mountains. Jack and his wife Nancy enjoyed hiking and climbing together, in 2005 the climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. He loved nature and admired all of Gods creations. He was a very spiritual man, who had great faith, Jack walked with the love of the Lord. "The Mountains were God's Cathedral of Nature." Jack spent much of his life hiking and climbing. His stepson James said "Jack would describe the mountains as the 'door to Heaven', but this time Jesus decided to open up the door for him and took him home."
On Saturday, December 4th, Jack had gone hiking with his dog "Shotgun" headin to Morning Star Peak. He did this often with his dog, he loved to hike with her. Shotgun is an Australian Blue Heeler, always waiting for Jack to take him hiking. Jack died of injuries related to an accident caused by an avalanche chute. The dog survived and was by his side when Jack was found.
His co-worker Matt said, "His home was up here. He's hiked these hills so many times, he knows these hills as well as anybody." He was an avid outdoorsman who was well respected in the climbing community. Jack loved to take pictures of nature and was a great photographer. Jack attended Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Everett. Choir director Mary Schireman recalled him as a smart, funny and spiritual man with a great voice. He had the presence of joy and happiness and just a peaceful nature. If Jack wasn't in the choir, he was either working or on the mountain. That was as close to God as he could get. Climbing was very spiritual for him.
Jack's favorite places in his hometown of Munising were Paradise at 5 Mile Point, Pictured Rocks, Miners, Grand Island, Munising Falls, looking for agates, fly fishing on the creek with his dad, Lake Trout fishing with Jimmer and dad, ice fishing, the sunsets and the Fourth of July Fireworks.
