John Sanjo “Sam” Macurio, age 83, of Munising, died late Sunday evening, December 1, 2019 at UP Health System Marquette. He was born on December 16, 1935 in Kalamazoo, Michigan to Sanjo “Sam” and Eulalia “Bud” (Rice) Macurio. Sam grew up in Kalamazoo and Comstock, Michigan. He served in the U.S. Army from 1957 until 1960. Sam worked as a union carpenter. He married Virginia “Gina” Dale on October 15, 1966. They moved to Galesburg, Michigan and then returned back to Munising. Sam loved hunting, fishing, taking trips to Canada, and visiting with friends. He was heartbroken when Gina preceded him in death on September 9, 2018.
Sam is survived by his brother Barry Macurio of Escanaba and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Gina, brothers Patrick and Daniel Macurio, and sister Eulalia Hagenbaugh.

Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion and Vietnam Veterans Honor Guard on Friday, June 5, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising.
