Munising
John "Jack" McCarthy, age 81, of Munising had his homecoming peacefully on Saturday, June 30, 2012 at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. He was born on April 14, 1931 in Newark, New Jersey to John and Helen (Chesney) McCarthy and was raised in Irvington, NJ. Jack graduated from Seaton Hall Prep School in South Orange, NJ. He entered into the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War, and was in the battle recently documented on PBS Outpost Harry - Hold at All Costs. After Jack was Honorably Discharged he attended Seaton Hall University. He then followed his father's footsteps and became a member of the Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental, and Reinforcing Iron Workers - Local Union 373 in Perth Amboy, NJ, where he worked for forty years before retiring. Jack married Bonnie (Cooley) Flanders on November 7, 1992.
After Jack retired he volunteered with Meals on Wheels and served on the board of directors for Berringer House, an assisted living co-op home. Jack spent most of his life in New Jersey where he loved his home, but has enjoyed the last ten years in Michigan. He enjoyed family gatherings, traveling to various historical sites throughout the nation, old movies, sports statistics, watching Notre Dame Football, and his dogs Ace the Husky and Sophie the Basset Hound. Jack loved a good bargain, from shopping for groceries to attending auctions and collecting antiques.
He is survived by his wife - Bonnie (Cooley) McCarthy of Munising; sons - John of Hackettstown, NJ, Kevin (Donna) of Waldwick, NJ, Brian (Linda) of Brick, NJ, and Brendan McCarthy of Woodbridge, NJ; daughter - Kathleen (John) LeGoff of Belle Mead, NJ; grandsons - Aiden , Matthew and Christopher McCarthy; stepchildren - Deirdre (Ed) Heffner and their children Mary, Ted and Charlie, of Flemington, NJ, John Flanders of Munising, MI, and Jennifer (Mike) D'Amato and children Erika and Nicole of East Brunswick, NJ; stepsister - Susan Bandrowsky of Springfield, NJ; niece - Ann (Thess) Prince; and great-nephew and niece - Camaron and Morgan. Jack was preceded in death by his father John McCarthy, mother Helen Bandrowsky, sister Eileen (Peter) Bruyere, and former wife Joellen Paulin.
Visitation will be on Friday, July 6, 2012 from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising, MI. Fr. Chris Gardiner will conduct Jack's memorial service beginning at 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at the Maple Grove Cemetery where the American Legion and Vietnam Veterans Honor Guards will conduct military honors. A memorial will be held in Jack's honor in Wildwood Crest Beach, NJ at a later date. Memorials in Jack's name may be made to the Bay Cliff Health Camp, the Alger County Humane Society, or St. Vincent De Paul.
