Joseph "Joe" Dolaskie, age 82, of N5470 H-15, Shingleton died on Monday, February 25, 2008 at 8:10 p.m. at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. Joe was born at Camp 31 near Melstrand, Michigan to Thomas and Anna (Sajovic) Dolaskie on July 17, 1925. He was raised in Shingleton and attended Wm. G. Mather High School. Joe enlisted into the U.S. Marines on September 10, 1943. During WWII, he participated in action against the enemy at Guam, Marianas Islands, Okinawa, and Ryukyu Islands. Joe returned to Shingleton in December of 1945 and worked in the woods as a sawyer. On December 20, 1947, Joe married Alice Lisac. They were married almost fifty-four years when she preceded him in death on July 31, 2001. Joe began his employment with Kimberly Clark on September 15, 1955 as a Laborer in the Engineering Dept. On September 16, 1956 he posted in to the Beater Room as a Broke Handler and progressed in that department to Repulper Operator. Joe retired from Kimberly Clark on January 1, 1987. He enjoyed reading Western novels. Joe was a member of the N.R.A., loved being outdoors, and enjoyed fishing and hunting deer, partridge and rabbits.
Joe is survived by three daughters - Karen Marx of Southgate, MI, Helen (Tom) Benchina of Shingleton, and Jodi Thorrington of Munising; grandchildren - Charleen Sowards, Kimberly (Mike) Gervasi, Michelle (Gary) Grimm, Tom (Charissa) Benchina, Jr., Carrie (Jeff) Robinson, Nikki (Kristopher Weathers) Fassbender; great-grandchildren - Shaena, Kayla, Gary Jr., Cody, Cassidy, Logan, Keegan, Chase , Cheyenne, Marcus, and Aiden, and numerous nieces and nephews; sister-in-law - Glady Dolaskie; brothers-in-law - Andy Lisac and Willie Lisac. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, wife Alice, sister Mary "Red" White, brother Tom Dolaskie, and nieces Barbara White- Kettler and Shirley White-Kostecki.
A luncheon in memory of Joe will be held at the Shingleton Community Center on Friday, February 29, 2008 at 12:00 noon. Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Friday from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. The Alger County Veterans Council and American Legion Honor Guard will conduct military honors at 7:30 p.m. with funeral services immediately following the Veterans in the funeral home's chapel.
