Joseph Richard Lancour, age 76 of Munising, died on Monday evening, August 14, 2023 at Medilodge of Munising following a brief illness and surrounded by his family. Joe was born on January 2, 1947 in Marquette to the late Richard and Jean (Richmond) Lancour. He graduated from Eben High School in 1965 and then served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era and then in the reserves. Joe returned home and moved to Munising where he was employed by Kimberly Clark. He retired from the Powerhouse in 2004 after thirty-eight years of service. Joe married Joan Verbunker Peters on June 20, 1987. He enjoyed snowmobiling, four-wheeling, motorcycling, reading, keeping his vehicles in tip top shape, collecting die-cast cars and sports memorabilia, and hunting and fishing in his younger days. Joe loved all Detroit teams with the Tigers being his greatest love – outside of his wife. He was most proud of his two no-hitters in baseball and bowling a 227 on his 10th birthday. Joe was known for his sharp memory, and he deeply loved all his pets through the years. He was a member of the American Legion and formerly of the Alger County Sno-Riders.
Joe is survived by his wife – Joan Lancour of Munising; step-son – Scott Peters of Munising; step-daughter – Michelle (Kevin) Dunham of Munising; grandson – Andrew Joseph Ketzler of Reno, NV; son-in-law – Michael Ketzler of Reno, NV; sister – Tina Patient of Marquette; brothers – Jim (Arlene) Lancour of Negaunee, Rick (Donna) Lancour of Traunik, Gary “Buck” (Alice) Lancour of Chatham, Dennis (Cindy) Lancour of Limestone, and Bob (Linda) Lancour of Chatham; step-sister – Dianne Posio of Pontiac; brother and sisters-in-law – Jake (Carol) Verbunker and Kay LeVeque all of Munising; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Joe was preceded in death by his beloved daughter - Teri Ketzler; parents - Richard Lancour and Jean Edes; stepmother Mary Lancour; stepfathers – Ivan Anderson and William Edes; parents-in-law - Vic and Mugs Verbunker; daughter-in-law – Pam Peters; infant brother and sister; stepbrothers – Robert Anderson and Paul “Bucky” Anderson; grandparents – Vernon and Opal Richmond and Paul and Flossie Lancour; brother-in-law – Larry LeVeque; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Graveside services will be held at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising on Tuesday, August 22, 2023 at 11:30 a.m. Military honors will be rendered by the American Legion and Vietnam Veterans Honor Guard, and Pastor Jim Rodgers will conduct committal prayers.
