Munising
Julia M. Passinault, age 93, of the Jericho House in Munising, died on Monday morning, November 29, 2010 at the Munising Memorial Hospital. She was born in Manistique on January 22, 1917 to Alfred and Catherine (Allen) Carefelle. Her family moved to Munising when Julia was an infant. She graduated from Sacred Heart School and then attended Wm. G. Mather High School. Julia married Earl J. Passinault on March 21, 1935. She was a homemaker and raised their three children. In 1960, they purchased the farm out on H-58 and raised cattle and horses. The family gave pony rides during the 4th of July and Miner's Castle. She and Earl were members of the U.P. Chiefs Motorcycle Club and they enjoyed traveling on the bike. They were also members of the Square Dancing Club. Julia loved to dance! When Earl's health failed, they sold the farm. Julia was faithful member of Sacred Heart Church and an avid supporter of St. Anthony's Guild. She also served as President of the Sacred Heart School PTA. Julia was a very faithful woman and she loved her Church. The only channel she watched on television was the Catholic Channel. Julia always donated to funeral lunches at the church and her deviled eggs were famous. She was the Secretary for the Marquette and Alger County Farm Bureau in the early 1960's and then again in the 1970's. Later on, she served as the group secretary. Julia was also involved with the Hiawatha Farm Bureau, Lady Foresters, Senior Citizens Center, Friends of the Library, Hospital Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary. Julia spent five summers (in her straw hat) at the Tourism Booth down at the City Dock. She enjoyed laughing, going places, eating ice cream at the Dock, car rides in the country, her nephew's camp in AuTrain, and Julia loved to organize the Carefelle family reunions.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law - Bruce and Celeste Passinault of Riverview, Florida; 17 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great grandchildren; "Aunt Giggles" is also survived by Mike Pond of Marquette, Patrick (Connie) Pond of Portage, MI, Kevin Pond of Phoenix, AZ, Greg (Mary Ellen) Pond of Munising, and Jami Pond of Gladstone; and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews on the Passinault side. Julia was preceded in death by her parents, husband of forty-seven years Earl on May 17, 1982, daughter and son-in-law Elaine Therese and Lyle Worthing, son Peter Passinault, sister Rita (Carefelle) Pond Hedglin, nephew Kenneth Pond, niece Ruth Pond, brothers-in-law Francis Pond and Winn Hedglin,cousins on the Allen side Muriel Wright and Catherine "Kitty" Sulliven(Art) Pelkki, and numerous other relatives on the Carefelle and Passinault sides of the family.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated by Father Chris Gardiner at Sacred Heart Church in Munising on July 6, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. Memorials in memory of Julia may be directed to the Sacred Heart Capital Campaign Fund at P.O. Box 99, Munising, MI 49862.
