Munising
Julius J. Raica, age 95, of 221 E. Varnum Street, died on Tuesday morning, August 25, 2009 at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. He was born on March 10, 1914 in Chicago, Illinois to John and Agnes Raica. As a young boy, Julius' family moved to Munising and he graduated from Sacred Heart School. When his father died, Julius left school to go to work and help support his mother and siblings. Julius began employment at the Munising Paper Company in 1935. He married Helen Adams in 1937. During WWII, Julius served as a Seaman in the Coast Guard Reserves. Following the War, he returned to the Mill where he had worked in the Paper Department, Log Yard, Finishing Room, Assistant Fire Chief, and Operator in the Specialties Department. Julius retired from Kimberly Clark on January 2, 1977. He was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Church. Julius enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Pictured Rocks Golf Course for many years. He bowled in local leagues, ski jumped in his younger days, and entertained the crowds on the 4th of July on his water skis. He loved speed and was a snowmobile enthusiast. Julius and Helen were married almost sixty years when she preceded him in death in February of 1997.
He is survived by his daughter - Judie and Bob Niemi of Eben; his son - Bob and Dagmar Raica of Marquette; grandchildren - Carla Niemi of Neenah, WI, Dale (Jen) Niemi of Orange County, CA, and Ryan Raica of Atlanta, GA; great-grandchildren - Sarah and Blake Niemi; sister - Babe Smith of Fenton, MI; brother - Ed Raica of Munising; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife Helen, Julius was preceded in death by brothers Steve and Hank Raica and sisters Waddie Murdock and Ann Schenavar.
Services for Mr. Raica will be held on Friday, August 28, 2009. Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Chris Gardiner at Sacred Heart Church at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery where the Alger County Veterans Council and American Legion Honor Guard will conduct military honors.
