Katherine "Kay" A. Carlson

Katherine "Kay" Anne Carlson, age 87, of AuTrain Trail, AuTrain died on Friday evening, May 30, 2008 at the Munising Memorial Hospital. She was born on February 23, 1921 in Marquette to the late Clyde and Elsie Bucklin. Kay was raised in Marquette and graduated from Graveraet High School in 1938. She had worked for the State of Michigan as a secretary, at Michigan Bell, and at the Peter White Library. Kay attended Northern Michigan University and during WWII, she worked in a munitions factory in Colorado. On September 24, 1945, Kay married Magnus John Carlson. Magnus' job moved their family around the Midwest. During those travels, Kay was a secretary at Bowling Green University and volunteered for the Red Cross. When Magnus retired, they moved north from Grand Rapids to the AuTrain area and they enjoyed their winters in Tucson. Kay was a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was an incredible cook and baker of pastries, apple pies, and chocolate chip cookies. Kay enjoyed sewing, reading, picking berries with Magnus and making raspberry jam, bird watching, and walking in the woods.

Kay is survived by her husband of over sixty-two years - Magnus Carlson of AuTrain; her son and daughter-in-law - Bruce and Gina Carlson of Grand Rapids; granddaughter - Deborah Carlson of Grand Rapids; grandson - Scott Carlson of Grand Rapids; sister - Helen McKenzie of Ann Arbor; sister-in-law - Mary Bucklin of Marquette; and numerous nieces and nephews. Kay was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Clyde and Bud Bucklin.

Visitation with family and friends will be held on Monday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising. Rev. Robert Sutherland will conduct graveside prayers on Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at 12:30 p.m. at the Serenity Pines Cemetery in AuTrain, Michigan.
