Kathleen Isabel Wilson Goss, age 98, of 212 Cherry Street, Munising, Michigan passed away on Sunday, September 25, 2011 at Munising Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Kathleen was born on June 30, 1913 in Calumet, Michigan to Matthew and Jessie (Forgan) Wilson. She graduated from Calumet High School at age sixteen and then from Northern Michigan Teachers' College and taught fifth and sixth grades at Mather School in Munising. "Miss Wilson" is fondly remembered by and has corresponded with many students. Kathleen married George Goss on July 17, 1943 in Springfield, Missouri. She took time off from teaching to raise their four children. She was a wonderful mother who lived by her motto "Find the good and praise it." Kathleen went back to Northern Michigan University and then finished her teaching career at Lincoln School teaching first and second grades. She is often remembered by her former students as "my favorite teacher." Kathleen enjoyed her family, her church friends and activities, her sewing, quilting, hosting her annual 4th of July picnic and reading. Kathleen has a library named in her honor in Laos inspired by her lifelong love of children and reading,. She was recognized in the 1999 Alger County Women Roll of Honor for her devotion to the education, happiness and well being of her students. Kathleen was a Brownie Scout leader, Cub Scout leader, Sunday school teacher and the last remaining member of the Friday Nighters Women's group. Kathleen was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church and an honorary life member of the Presbyterian Women. She was known for her quick wit and sense of humor and was very proud of her Scottish heritage.
She is survived by her four children - Margaret "Maggie" Meiss of Marquette, Christopher Goss of Deerton, Betsy (Frank) Trumbell of Iron Mountain and Barbara Goss (Jordan Fishman) of Milwaukee; grandchildren - Christopher Meiss, Katrina Benz, Matthew (Jamie), David (Faye) and Michael Trumbell; great-grandchildren Christopher, Julian, Tysen, Aundreas, Jacob and Isaac; sisters-in-law - Peg Wilson of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida and Helen Wilson of Hobbs, New Mexico. Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents, husband George on November 23, 1984, her brothers Robert, James, John and David Wilson, her sister Margaret Wilson and her sisters-in-law Christine and Val Wilson.
Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Pastor Jim Ramelis will conduct Kathleen's funeral service at the Presbyterian Church in Munising on Friday, September 30, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising. Her Pallbearers will be Doug Hardman, Rick Romano, Tim Matson, Matthew, Michael, and David Trumbell. Memorials for Kathleen may be donated to the First Presbyterian Church of Munising.
