Kay Elizabeth Pajunen

Kay Elizabeth Pajunen, age 70, of Chatham, died Friday morning, August 30, 2013 at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. She was born on November 25, 1942 in Hastings, Michigan to Rozelle and Clara (Johncock) Stanton. Kay grew up in Middleville and following graduation, she attended Ferris State. Kay earned her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from Ferris and then went on to earn her Master's in Education from Western Michigan University. She began her teaching career in Hastings and taught there for two years. Kay met Victor H. Pajunen and they were married on June 14, 1969. They both taught in the Oxford schools and Kay served as the President of the MEA in Oxford. Her entire career was spent teaching second grade. Kay and Vic enjoyed traveling together. When summer break started, they began their vacations that took them all over the United States. Their journeys took them backpacking and camping the mountains out west and exploring Alaska. They retired together in 1993 and moved to the Upper Peninsula in 1996. After retirement, they still enjoyed travelling together. Kay attended Sion Lutheran Church and she also enjoyed relaxing, reading, working Sudoku puzzles, and cooking.

She is survived by her husband of over forty-four years - Victor Pajunen of Chatham; sisters - Sue Schuhmacher and Sally Stanton both of Middleville; numerous nieces and nephew, some of whom were very close to their Aunt Kay; sisters-in-law - Nancy (Bob) Peterson of Eben and Judy Henderson of Trenary. Kay was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Jean Bowlin.

Services will be held at the Sion Lutheran Church in Chatham on Wednesday, September 4, 2013. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. Deacon John Weber will officiate Kay's funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham.
