Grand Marais
Kay L. Wampler, age 61, of Grand Marais, died Friday, August 4, 2017 under the loving care of her family following an over three-year battle with cancer. She was born on June 13, 1956 in Pontiac, Michigan to Clifford and Imogene (Lahman) Barnes. Kaygrew up in Pontiac and the Union Lake area. She graduated from Walled Lake High School in 1974. She went to college at Oakland Community College and earned a Business Administration degree with an accounting major. In 1994, Kay “found home” in Grand Marais. She worked as the township clerk for a couple of years, and was appointed to fill a vacancy as clerk from 2006 to 2008, when she was re-elected until 2012. Kay served as the treasurer for the Chamber of Commerce for nine years and twelve years for the Grand Marais Sno-Trails Association, and helped raise money for the Bayshore Park playground in Grand Marais. She enjoyed stained glass, crocheting and knitting, and all things crafty.
Kay is survived by her life companion – Marc Oglevie; daughter – Elizabeth (Geoff) Vernon of Grosse Point, MI; grandchildren – Galen, Ethan, and Allison; sister Gayle Clausen Adam of Murfreesboro, AR; and niece – Stacy Jo Barnes of Appleton, WI. She was preceded in death by her mother – Imogene “Jeanne” Fraser, brother – Don Alan Barnes; and half-sister – Tina Marie Barnes.
