Kevin James VanLandschoot, age 44, of Munising, died on Friday morning, November 27, 2015 at his home in search of peace and answers following a yearlong battle with depression. He was born on February 21, 1971 in Munising to Jerome and Annetta (Blank) VanLandschoot. Kevin grew up in Munising and while in high school he excelled in academics and played football and basketball for the Mustangs. During the summers, he would fish with his dad and uncles on Lake Superior for VanLandschoot Fisheries. Kevin graduated from Munising High School in 1989 and entered into the U.S. Navy. Kevin served for four years during the Gulf War and during the time of Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He was stationed on the USS Brewton and the USS Fletcher. During his service in the Navy, his father, Jerry was able to take a Tiger Cruise on the USS Fletcher with Kevin from San Diego to Hawaii. Kevin was honorably discharged and then attended DeVry University where he graduated top of his class, summa cum laude, with a Bachelor's Degree in Telecommunications. Kevin married Tammy DesJardins on January 5, 1999. He worked in Newberry for LMAS and then for fifteen years at Marquette General Hospital in the IT Department as a system analyst and network administrator. He continued to fish during the summers with his dad throughout his adulthood as his schedule would allow. In September of 2015, Kevin began employment with Hiawatha Communications as a network operator engineer. He was a member of the American Legion Post #131 and he enjoyed reading, exercising, hiking, and working on computers.
Kevin is survived by his loving wife - Tammy; his parents - Jerry and Annetta VanLandschoot; aunts and uncles - Sally D'Orazio, Loretta Reff, Deanna Boyak, Jim Blank, Carol James, Jeanne (Tom) Vicary, Susie (Jim) Prunick, David (Anne) VanLandschoot, Dennis (Mary) VanLandschoot, Gary VanLandschoot (Kim Kaiser), Alan VanLandschoot (John Murphy), and Jeff VanLandschoot; brothers and sisters-in-law - Linda Cotey (Pat Godfrey), Cindy (Tom) Moseley, Judy DesJardins (Scott Adair), Pat DesJardins (Xiaoqin Sun), Tim (Dawnmarie) DesJardins, Terry (Ree) DesJardins, Rodney (Shawna) DesJardins, Duane DesJardins (Brunella Gurski), and Darrell (Kathy) DesJardins; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Kevin was preceded in death by his grandparents - Herbert and Frances Blank and Jerome and Anne VanLandschoot; parents-in-law - Louis DesJardins and Edith and John Matson; and brother-in-law - Michael DesJardins.
Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Monday, November 30, 2015 from 12:00 noon until 5:30 p.m. Father Chris Gardiner and Deacon Tom Moseley will celebrate Kevin's funeral Mass at Sacred Heart Church on Monday at 6:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. where the American Legion and Vietnam Veteran Honor Guards will conduct military honors along with the committal prayers. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to be made to Sacred Heart Church or the American Legion Post #131.
