L. Marie (Juntunen) Hakkola, age 74, of Eben Junction, entered into eternal peace early Thursday evening, April 30, 2015 at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising after surrendering to her fourteen year battle with fronto temporal dementia. She was born Lucille Marie on November 19, 1940 in Munising, Michigan to Yalmer and Hilda (Hogan) Juntunen. She grew up on the family farm in Eben, which was the setting for numerous stories of escapades with family and friends. Her grandfather lived with her family and was unable to say Lucille, so he called her Marie. The name stuck and was the name she used throughout most of her life. She graduated from Eben High School in the class of 1958 and always enjoyed planning reunions with her classmates.
Marie married Donald Hakkola in 1962 and together they raised their 3 children. While raising her family, Marie went back to NMU to earn her Bachelor's Degree in Education. She graduated in May of 1974 and that fall was hired as a teacher with the Rock River School District in Eben. She taught at various grade levels, and seemed to find her niche in the junior high where she taught for many years. While teaching, she returned to school and earned her Master's Degree in Education. Marie retired from teaching in 2001.
Reading was a passion of hers. She especially liked inspirational passages and kept a journal of her favorites. She also enjoyed her flower gardens, shopping, eating out, and supporting her children and grandchildren in all of their activities. She was a member of the Finnish Apostolic Lutheran Church, the Alger County Historical Society and the Red Hat Society.
She is survived by her loving husband, Donald of 52 years; her three children, Gregory (Tina) Hakkola of Eben, Jodi (Jeff) Carney of Big Rapids, MI, and Heidi (DeeJay) Paquette of Munising, MI; her seven grandchildren Jacob, Jonathan and Joseph Carney; Aliisa, Joseph and Alexandra Paquette; and Brennen Hakkola; her sisters Eva VanHorn of Vernon, AZ and Nancy (Robert) Ranta of Gwinn, MI; sisters-in-law Aune Juntunen, Vivian Hakkola, and Virginia Hakkola all of Eben; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death are her parents, Hilda and Yalmer Juntunen; grandson, Jordan Joseph Jamison; brother, Elmer Juntunen; brother and sister-in-law, Eugene (Neola) Juntunen; sister and brother-in-law, Beatrice (Ernest) Ronn; and brother-in-law, James VanHorn.
Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising on Tuesday, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday morning from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Dale Kemp will conduct Marie's funeral service at the Finnish Apostolic Lutheran Church in Negaunee, Michigan (County Road 492) on Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. where she will be escorted by her grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Finnish Apostolic Lutheran Church in Negaunee, the Alger County Historical Society, or the Frontotemporal Dementia Research at Mayo Clinic. Gifts can be mailed directly to Mayo Clinic, Department of Development, 200 First Street SW, Rochester, MN 55905 in Marie's name.
