Munising
Laura Lydia Simonen, age 96, passed away on September 25, 2011 in Evanston Illinois. She was born February 12, 1915 in Munising Michigan to Kalle Armas and Ida Lydia Simonen. She graduated with the class of 1933 from Mather High School in Munising and was first in her class at the University of Michigan School of Nursing. She had a long career as a Registered Nurse in New York City and Chicago.
Preceding World War II she enlisted in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and was in the first unit deployed after Pearl Harbor. During six years of service she was stationed in Panama, on various transport ships to and from Europe, and in military hospitals. She was discharged as a First Lieutenant.
Laura spoke several languages, traveled frequently to Finland, from where her parents emigrated, and to other European countries. She was very actively engaged in several Palestinian Rights Organizations.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Paul and Toivo Simonen. She is survived by nephews Thomas, Fredric and Edward Simonen. Laura was interred in the Munising Maple Grove Cemetery.
