Laura Evelyn Takkinen, age 88, of Takkinen Road in Chatham, died Monday, October 26, 2009 at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. She was born on February 20, 1921 in Munising, Michigan, to Teofil and Anna (Sislock) Ludwa. Laura attended the Washington School and Sacred Heart School where she graduated from the eighth grade in 1936, and she also attended Wm. G. Mather High School. She worked as a waitress in Munising and also worked at the Bon Ton Café in Marquette. She was a member of the Alger County Historical Society. She liked to cook, sew, read, embroidering, and to go camping. She married Leslie A. Takkinen on October 10, 1942 in Chatham. They were married fifty-eight years when he preceded her in death on October 3, 2001.
Laura is survived by her three children - Leslie L. (Linda) Takkinen Jr. of West Allis, WI, Kathleen La Rock of Chatham, and William (Carol) Takkinen of Chatham; sister - Anne Carlson of Munising; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Leslie; son - Laurence; her parents Teofil and Anna; sisters - Josephine (Orley) Kettering, Mary (Martin) Carlson, and Dorothy (Max) Courter; brothers - Michael and Patrick Ludwa son-in-law - Rod La Rock; and brother-in-law - William Carlson.
Laura's visitation will be on Thursday, October 29, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Sion Lutheran Church in Chatham. Pastor Les Takkinen will conduct Laura's funeral service at the Church at Noon. Interment will be at Pine Grove Cemetery.
